The best documented language on this list. The Goethe-Institut publishes real guided hours, German universities publish exact entry requirements, and the Opportunity Card puts a number on each level.
German is graded on the CEFR scale and every route into Germany names a level. Here is what each one is worth before you spend a single hour on it.
Goethe-Institut certificates are valid indefinitely, and from B1 upward the exam is modular, so listening, reading, writing and speaking can be sat and retaken separately.
German has more recognised certificates than any other language here, and unlike French they are not interchangeable across purposes.
TestDaF and DSH are the two German exams that sit outside CEFR naming. If a centre tells you "TestDaF 4 equals C1", they are approximating. TDN 4 is the university threshold, which is what actually matters.
Goethe. A module is passed at sixty percent. B1 to C2 are modular and each module is marked out of one hundred. At B2 the written papers run about one hundred and eighty minutes in total, with speaking around fifteen minutes for pairs. A1 and A2 are not modular.
Digital TestDaF. Four sections on PC with a headset, about three hours ten minutes plus breaks, with integrated tasks such as reading a text and then summarising it aloud. Each section is scored zero to twenty:

Total 0 to 80. The digital version also offers a combined certificate, taking your best results across attempts within six months.
The standard requirement is DSH-2. The accepted equivalents are TestDaF with TDN 4 in all four sections, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, ÖSD C2, DSD Level II, or the Feststellungsprüfung. Some programmes require DSH-3, including several at Heidelberg such as MA German Studies, MA Conference Interpreting and the LL.M. in Law. English-taught master's programmes are a separate route with their own English requirement.
The points route requires German A1 or English B2 as a minimum just to enter. Then:

You need six points in total.
Meeting only the A1 minimum earns you zero points. The entry condition and the points table are two different things. A candidate who stops at A1 has satisfied the door but contributed nothing toward the six points they need. This is the clearest argument we have for pushing past A2, and it is almost never explained properly.

India. Goethe-Institut and Max Mueller Bhavan exam centres in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, with partner Goethe-Zentren in Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Trivandrum. Goethe India also administers TestDaF.

Every programme includes dedicated one to one sessions with your own teacher for the questions that came up after class. Booked when you need them, not parked until the next group session.
The recording reaches you the same day, every time. Miss a class for a school exam, a work trip or a bad week and you have not missed the lesson. It is also the fastest revision tool you will have in the last fortnight.
Complete papers in the official format, timed, including the oral. Most candidates lose marks to the format rather than the language, and a mock is the cheapest place to find that out.
Before you start, we set the target and the timeline. Midway, we reset it against your mock results. Before you book the exam, we confirm you are sitting the right version on the right date. Teaching without this is just hours.
The whole course can run one to one rather than in a cohort. Your own teacher, your own pace, sessions timed around school or work, and the syllabus reordered around what you actually need first.
German missions require a Goethe-Institut A1 certificate for spouse visas and A2 for several family reunification categories, and those certificates have to come from Goethe or a recognised partner. We prepare for exactly those examinations.
We do not stop there, because A1 opens a door and earns zero points. Our German programmes are built toward the passes that change outcomes: B2 for German taught bachelor’s programmes and three Opportunity Card points, and C1 for master’s programmes and the regulated professions, medicine included.
Only if the programme is taught in German, in which case you need DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 across all four sections. Many master's programmes are taught in English and ask for English proficiency instead. But German still matters for the part-time work, the internship and the job afterwards, which is usually the real reason students go.
The Goethe-Institut publishes 600 to 800 teaching units of forty five minutes to reach B2 from beginner. At six hours a week that is roughly two years. Intensive tracks compress it but not by half.
TestDaF if you are applying to a German-taught university programme, because TDN 4 is the recognised threshold. Goethe if you want a general purpose certificate that does not expire, or if you are collecting Opportunity Card points, where the CEFR level is what gets counted.
The certificate itself is valid indefinitely, though a receiving university or employer may impose its own recency rule. Check the specific institution.
At B1 and above, yes. Goethe exams are modular from B1 upward, so you can retake listening, reading, writing or speaking individually. A1 and A2 are not modular.
